Andrew Tang Andrew Tang, viola

Andrew Tang, 17, is a senior at Simsbury HS. He started on violin at the age of 5, and picked up viola in 6th grade at the behest of his orchestra conductor. Viola became his primary instrument in 2007 after a long summer of deep contemplation and little practice due to severe tendinitis. Since then, he has been both concertmaster and principal violist of Simsbury HS and CT Northern Regional Festival orchestras, and principal violist of the CT All-State Festival orchestra. He placed 3rd in the Eastern Division MTNA competition and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra 2009 Concerto Competition, and was the 1st place winner in the 2009 Musical Club of Hartford competition. Of all the camps Andrew has been to throughout his long and illustrious life, Tanglewood stands out as among one of the greatest and most magical experiences he will ever have the questionable opportunity to pay six thousand dollars for, mainly due to the inclusion in the orchestra performance repertoire of Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring) under Paul Haas. Today, he happily serves as principal violist and gum-chewer of both the Connecticut Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra.

He currently studies with with Steve Larson at University of Hartford/The Hartt School of Music and Laura Seay & Heidi Castleman at Juilliard Pre-College. Past teachers include Jaroslaw Lis (Hartford Symphony Orchestra/Hartt Community Division, Hartford, CT), Kuai-Chu Chu (Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra/concertmistress, Taipei, Taiwan), Julian Meyer (Temple University Community Division, Philadelphia, PA), Fudeco Takahashi (New England Conservatory, Boston, MA), and Donna Ngai (Hartt Community Division, Hartford, CT).
